How about a zeitgeist for podcasting?
Today's word was a long time coming. I have wanted to do this podcast for two or three months now. The word is Zeitgeist. It is a German expression that we english speakers have borrowed since didn't have one of our own. It means spirit of the times and it is used to describe the dominant culture, spirit or feel of a moment in time or history.
For example "In 1996 every fresh-out-of-college computer programmer figured he would be an Internet millionaire by the end of the decade. Of course that was just the zeitgeist of the times." I think this example is not entirely consistent with the historical, dictionary definition of zeitgeist. The reference materials I checked out all referred to a longer time period such as a decade or even a century.
Today I think with our rapid creation and evolution of culture zeitgeist is often being used to refer to the spirit the moment.
To get sense of the zeitgeist of the month check out Google's zeitgeist. If you are more into pictures how about the zeitgeist over at flickr.com. Visit buzz.yahoo.com for their spirit of the times. Or check out one of my favorites sites, 43things.com, to see what we all want to accomplish with our lives. Lastly, you can visit tenbyten.org to see 100 pictures and words that define this very moment .
Unfortunatley there isn't a zeitgeist for podcasting yet.
Here is the daly zeitgeist from flickr:
